Plot Summary

Serafina Delle Rose (Anna Magnani) worshipped her husband Rosario. He was, in her fiery, absolute imagination, the perfect man — passionate, virile, devoted, and marked by a rose tattoo on his chest that she believed was a mystical sign of their sacred love. When Rosario is killed while smuggling contraband, Serafina seals herself inside their house with his ashes, refusing to emerge, rejecting all human contact, and transforming her grief into a religion.

Three years pass. Serafina has become a recluse — unwashed, unbrushed, living in a shuttered house surrounded by religious icons and the urn containing Rosario’s ashes. Her daughter Rosa (Marisa Pavan) is a beautiful young woman desperate to live her own life and fall in love, but Serafina’s suffocating grief and her hysterical control over Rosa’s virtue threaten to destroy the girl’s chance at happiness.

Then Alvaro Mangiacavallo (Burt Lancaster) arrives. Alvaro is a bumbling, clumsy, warm-hearted Italian truck driver with a body like a Roman gladiator and the soul of a sweet, confused child. He is everything Rosario was not — inarticulate, accident-prone, and hilariously lacking in sophistication — but he is magnificently, irrepressibly alive. His pursuit of Serafina is simultaneously comic and deeply moving, as this big, tender man tries to reach the volcanic woman hiding behind her dead husband’s memory. Williams’s play unfolds as a celebration of life over death, desire over grief, and the terrifying, glorious courage required to love again after devastating loss.
