Plot Summary

Arthur Dowell is a happily married man whose carefully ordered life is thrown into complete chaos when a beautiful young woman named Olive arrives unexpectedly at his apartment claiming she desperately needs a place to stay for the night. Arthur’s wife Mae is away visiting relatives, and his well-meaning attempts to handle the awkward situation discreetly only succeed in making everything spectacularly worse. When Arthur tries to arrange alternative accommodations for Olive, a chain of misunderstandings and unfortunate coincidences spirals wildly out of control, drawing more and more people into the confusion.

Each frantic effort to explain the perfectly innocent situation only leads to deeper complications, with friends, neighbors, and Mae’s razor-tongued suspicious best friend all drawing the worst possible conclusions about Arthur’s behavior. A simple phone call turns into an accusation, an innocent taxi ride becomes damning evidence, and Arthur’s desperate alibis contradict each other at the worst possible moments. As more people become entangled in the ever-expanding farce — including a jealous suitor, a nosy building superintendent, and Arthur’s own befuddled business partner — the web of confusion grows so tangled that even Arthur can barely keep track of his own explanations. He must find a way to untangle the mounting chaos before Mae returns home and his marriage is ruined beyond all hope of repair.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Out of the Blue was originally filmed in black and white, capturing the screwball energy of postwar Hollywood comedy through sharp, fast-paced cinematography. This professionally colorized restoration enhances every scene with frame-by-frame precision, from the stylish apartment interiors furnished in mid-century elegance to the fashionable wardrobes that define each character. Virginia Mayo’s glamorous ensembles pop with vibrant color, while the sophisticated Manhattan settings gleam with warm golds and polished wood tones. The colorized version brings new visual life to the comedic chaos, with the contrasting personalities of each character reflected in their distinctive color palettes — Arthur’s conservative suits against Olive’s eye-catching attire emphasize the comic tension at the heart of every scene. The colorized version preserves the rapid comic timing of the original while adding visual flair that makes this restored classic film shine for modern audiences. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Released in 1947, Out of the Blue assembled a remarkable cast including George Brent, Virginia Mayo, Ann Dvorak, Carole Landis, and Turhan Bey in one of the postwar era’s most entertaining screwball comedies. The film represented the twilight of the classic screwball comedy tradition that had flourished throughout the 1930s and 1940s, carrying forward the zany spirit of earlier masterpieces like Bringing Up Baby and My Man Godfrey into the changing landscape of postwar American cinema. Director Leigh Jason, a veteran of the comedy genre who had helmed numerous successful films at RKO, brought expert timing and brisk pacing to the production. Carole Landis delivered one of her final memorable screen performances before her tragic death the following year, making the film a poignant reminder of her considerable comic talent. Virginia Mayo, fresh from her rise to stardom in The Best Years of Our Lives, demonstrated her comedic range alongside the suave George Brent, whose long career stretching back to the early 1930s brought effortless charm to the beleaguered husband role. Through modern colorization, this delightful farce reaches new audiences who can enjoy its timeless humor and appreciate the remarkable chemistry of its ensemble cast.
