Plot Summary
A high priest of Karnak travels to America with the living mummy Kharis to kill all those who had desecrated the tomb of the Egyptian princess Ananka thirty years earlier. The high priest, carrying on the ancient duty of protecting the princess’s tomb, has tracked down the archaeologists and explorers who violated the sacred burial site decades ago. His mission is one of vengeance, to punish those who dared to disturb the eternal rest of the princess.
Kharis, the living mummy, is brought to America through means both mystical and practical. The mummy, preserved through ancient tana leaf fluid and the priest’s rituals, is a terrifying force of supernatural vengeance. The high priest guides Kharis from one victim to another, using the mummy’s supernatural strength to carry out the ancient curse.
As the murders begin, the American authorities and the remaining members of the original expedition must piece together the connection between the victims and the ancient Egyptian curse. The film builds to a climax where the high priest, Kharis, and the American protagonists confront each other, with the fate of the remaining expedition members hanging in the balance. The battle between ancient Egyptian vengeance and modern American determination forms the dramatic core of the film.

Historical Significance
Released in 1942, The Mummy’s Tomb represents the golden age of Universal horror and the studio’s successful formula of bringing classic monsters to modern America. The film is a sequel to “The Mummy’s Hand” (1940), continuing the story of Kharis the mummy and the Egyptian curse that followed the desecration of Princess Ananka’s tomb. Universal Studios had created a successful franchise with their monster films, and The Mummy’s Tomb continued this tradition by bringing the ancient Egyptian monster to contemporary American settings.
Lon Chaney Jr., who had become famous for his portrayal of the Wolf Man, took on the role of Kharis, continuing the tradition of actors playing multiple Universal monsters. Chaney’s physical presence and ability to convey both tragedy and terror made him an ideal choice for the role of the mummy, a creature that is both victim and villain in the Universal horror tradition.
The film’s release during World War II reflects the enduring appeal of horror films as escapism during dark times. While the world was at war, audiences could find entertainment in the supernatural threats of horror films, which provided a safe form of fear that was removed from the real dangers of wartime. The film’s theme of ancient vengeance also resonated with the era’s concerns about the consequences of past actions coming back to haunt the present. Through modern colorization, this classic horror reaches new audiences who can appreciate its place in the Universal monster legacy, its atmospheric storytelling, and Lon Chaney Jr.’s performance. Now also available en couleur.
