Experience the gripping The Secret of Convict Lake (1951) in stunning colorized HD. Directed by Michael Gordon, this atmospheric Western thriller stars Glenn Ford as the leader of a group of escaped convicts who stumble upon an isolated settlement in the High Sierra mountains — a settlement populated entirely by women, whose men have all gone away to search for the very escapees now standing at their door. Based on a true incident from 1871, the film creates an extraordinary situation: desperate, dangerous men trapped by winter in a community of resourceful, frightened women, with the snow-blocked mountain passes ensuring that neither group can leave. As tensions rise, alliances form, and hidden motives are revealed, the question becomes not whether violence will erupt but who will survive when it does. With superb performances from Gene Tierney and Ethel Barrymore, this is a tense, psychologically complex Western unlike any other. Plot Summary
In the winter of 1871, a group of convicts escapes from the Nevada State Prison and flees into the Sierra Nevada mountains, pursued by a posse drawn from the men of a small, isolated settlement called Monte Diablo. While the men are away hunting the escapees, the convicts themselves — led by the enigmatic Jim Canfield (Glenn Ford) — arrive at the now-undefended settlement.
The women of Monte Diablo face a terrifying situation: they are alone, outnumbered, and at the mercy of desperate men who have nothing to lose. Among the women are Marcia Stoddard (Gene Tierney), who possesses both beauty and quiet inner strength, and Granny (Ethel Barrymore), the settlement’s matriarch whose frontier toughness and shrewd judgment become the women’s greatest asset.
But the situation is more complex than a simple confrontation between predators and victims. Jim Canfield is not a common criminal — he was imprisoned for a crime that connects directly to this settlement, and his arrival is not accidental. He has come to Monte Diablo for a specific purpose: to settle an old score with one of the town’s men, a man whose actions sent Canfield to prison for a crime that was, at minimum, a shared responsibility.
As the winter deepens and the passes remain blocked by snow, the enforced proximity creates unexpected dynamics. Some of the convicts prove more decent than expected. Some of the women prove more dangerous than they appear. The relationship between Canfield and Marcia develops a charged emotional dimension that complicates everyone’s calculations. And among the convicts, a vicious faction led by a truly dangerous criminal threatens to destroy whatever fragile truce has been established.
The return of the men — and the inevitable confrontation between Canfield and his true target — builds toward a climax of revelation, violence, and hard-won justice in the snow-bound mountains.

Historical Significance
The Secret of Convict Lake is based on a real incident from 1871 — an escape from the Nevada State Prison that led to a confrontation at a Sierra Nevada settlement. The real Convict Lake, located east of the Sierra Nevada in California, takes its name from this very incident. The film’s unusual premise — desperate men trapped with resourceful women in an isolated winter setting — creates a psychological pressure-cooker that anticipates later, more explicitly feminist revisionist Westerns. Gene Tierney and Ethel Barrymore bring genuine star power and dramatic weight to roles that challenge the era’s typical treatment of women in Western films. Through colorization, this psychologically rich and historically based Western has been preserved for modern audiences.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Movie-Specific Questions
Q: Is this really based on a true story?
A: Yes — the 1871 prison break and the confrontation at the Sierra settlement are historical facts. Convict Lake in California is named after this incident, and visitors can still see the area where these events took place.
Q: Is Gene Tierney good in a Western?
A: Excellent — she brings the same luminous beauty and emotional intelligence that characterised her iconic roles in Laura and Leave Her to Heaven. Her presence elevates the material far above the typical Western.
Q: Is this an action Western or a character study?
A: Both. The confined setting and the psychological dynamics between the characters create compelling character drama, while the action sequences — when they come — deliver genuine excitement and tension.
