Plot Summary

John Haloran dies of a heart attack while rowing on a lake late at night. His wife Louise, a calculating and greedy woman, conceals his death because she knows that his share of the family inheritance will revert to his mother if his death becomes known before the old woman changes her will. Louise dumps John’s body in the lake and travels to the family’s ancestral castle in Ireland, pretending that he has been delayed on business.

At the castle, Louise encounters the deeply disturbed Haloran family, who are gathered for their annual memorial ceremony honouring Kathleen, a young family member who drowned in the castle pond years ago. The mother, Lady Haloran, remains obsessively devoted to Kathleen’s memory, and this obsession has warped the entire family dynamic, creating an atmosphere of repressed guilt, resentment, and barely contained madness.
