Plot Summary
Arnold “Red” Kluger is one of the most dangerous and ruthlessly violent criminals ever to inhabit a prison cell. Convicted of murder and sentenced to death, he has spent his time behind bars nursing an all-consuming hatred for the three people he blames for his downfall — Detective Ray Williams, who tracked him down and arrested him; District Attorney Barker MacDonald, who prosecuted the case; and Carol, a nightclub singer whose testimony sealed his conviction.
Kluger escapes from prison with cold-blooded efficiency, killing a guard in the process and immediately setting his meticulously planned revenge into motion. With the help of a small gang of loyal confederates, he systematically kidnaps all three of his targets, snatching them from their homes and workplaces with terrifying precision before the police can mount an effective response.
He brings his captives to a remote and isolated desert cabin, far from any help or hope of rescue. There, in close and claustrophobic quarters, Kluger reveals the true depth of his sadistic nature. He does not simply want to kill his victims — he wants them to suffer, to experience the same helpless terror and despair that he felt when they combined to send him to death row. He toys with them psychologically, playing them against each other, exploiting their fears and weaknesses.
Detective Williams, even in captivity, refuses to surrender. He works methodically to find any possible advantage, any exploitable weakness in Kluger’s operation, any chance to save the other hostages and bring the killer to justice. The tension escalates relentlessly as the police close in on the hideout, Kluger’s unstable confederates begin to crack under pressure, and Williams prepares to make his desperate move in a climax of violence and suspense.
