Plot Summary

Sandra Dawson, a beautiful Italian woman now married to a successful American lawyer named Andrew, returns to her family’s grand ancestral estate in the ancient Tuscan hilltop city of Volterra for a ceremony honoring the memory of her late father, a distinguished Jewish scientist who perished in the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz. The visit, which Andrew believes will be a brief and manageable formality, instead reopens wounds that have never come close to healing.

Sandra is consumed by a burning conviction that her own mother and her mother’s second husband, the coldly aristocratic Gilardini, actively betrayed her father to the Fascist authorities and are directly responsible for his deportation and death. This belief has poisoned her relationship with her family for years and driven her into a seething rage that she has never been able to resolve. Her mother, now confined to a wing of the palazzo in a state of mental decline, remains an unsettling presence haunting the corridors.

Sandra’s return also brings a reunion with her brother Gianni, a tormented and unsuccessful writer who still lives in the shadow of the family estate. The bond between Sandra and Gianni is intense, complicated, and deeply unsettling to Andrew, who begins to sense that their relationship harbors secrets that go far beyond ordinary sibling affection. As the days pass within the crumbling, shadow-filled palazzo, confrontations erupt between Sandra and her stepfather, between Gianni and Andrew, and between the siblings themselves, peeling back layers of guilt, accusation, and forbidden emotion.

The ceremony honoring Sandra’s father becomes the catalyst for a final reckoning with the family’s wartime betrayals and private transgressions, building to a devastating conclusion in which the weight of the past proves too heavy for anyone to bear. This classic movie is a haunting exploration of trauma, family betrayal, and the impossibility of escaping history.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Sandra was originally filmed in luminous black and white, with Visconti using the shadow-filled corridors, sun-drenched Italian landscapes, and the decaying grandeur of the palazzo to mirror Sandra’s inner turmoil. This professionally colorized restoration transforms every scene with frame-by-frame precision, revealing the warm honey-colored stone of the Tuscan architecture, the rich dark wood and faded tapestries of the family interiors, and the golden Tuscan sunlight streaming through ancient windows. The contrast between the beauty of Volterra’s landscape and the darkness of what happens within the palazzo becomes a powerful visual metaphor in color. The colorized version adds emotional depth to this restored classic film. Now also available in colour.

Historical Significance

Sandra won the prestigious Golden Lion, the highest prize at the Venice Film Festival, in 1965, cementing Luchino Visconti’s reputation as one of cinema’s undisputed masters. Inspired in part by the ancient Greek myth of Electra, with its themes of family betrayal, vengeance, and forbidden bonds, the film is also deeply rooted in Italy’s painful reckoning with its wartime collaboration with Nazi Germany and the deportation of Italian Jews. Claudia Cardinale, one of the great beauties and talents of European cinema, delivers one of her most powerful and emotionally complex performances. Visconti’s meticulous attention to period detail and psychological nuance creates a film that functions simultaneously as family melodrama, political statement, and mythic tragedy. Through professional colorization, this Visconti masterpiece reaches international audiences.
