Plot Summary
Indochina, 1954. The French garrison at Dien Bien Phu is surrounded and under relentless siege by Viet Minh forces under General Giap. The remote valley fortress, which French military planners had confidently established as an impregnable stronghold, has become a death trap β its airstrip is destroyed, its defensive positions are being systematically overwhelmed, and the garrison is running desperately short of ammunition, medical supplies, and men.
As the situation deteriorates from critical to catastrophic, French paratroopers from bases across Indochina volunteer for what they know is likely a suicide mission β to jump into the besieged fortress and reinforce the garrison. The film follows several of these volunteer paratroopers as they prepare for and execute their jumps into the inferno of Dien Bien Phu.
Among them are men with widely different motivations. Captain Dowd (Jacques Sernas) is a professional soldier driven by duty and loyalty to his comrades trapped in the fortress. Sergeant Tailler (Kurt Kasznar) is a veteran who has survived years of Indochina combat and jumps because he cannot abandon the men he has fought beside. Others are young and idealistic, drawn by naive notions of glory that are quickly shattered by the reality of what they find on the ground.
What awaits them in the valley is a nightmare of continuous bombardment, shrinking perimeters, hand-to-hand combat in the trenches, and the knowledge that no rescue is coming. The paratroopers who have volunteered to jump into the battle must fight alongside the exhausted remnants of the garrison in increasingly desperate conditions, knowing that defeat is inevitable but determined to sell their lives as dearly as possible. The film captures the final agonizing days of the siege with unflinching realism, building to the historic fall of the fortress.

Historical Significance
Jump Into Hell is one of the earliest Hollywood films to depict the French Indochina War, and specifically the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (1954), one of the most significant military engagements of the 20th century. The fall of Dien Bien Phu ended French colonial rule in Indochina and set the stage for American involvement in Vietnam. The film was remarkably timely, released just a year after the actual battle, and its depiction of volunteer paratroopers jumping into a doomed fortress captures one of the most poignant episodes of the siege. Through colorization, this historically significant war film is preserved for modern audiences.
