Plot Summary

James Vanning (Aldo Ray) is a commercial artist on the run, suspected by both the police and a pair of ruthless criminals of killing his friend and stealing a bag containing $350,000 from a bank robbery. In truth, Vanning is entirely innocent — he stumbled upon the aftermath of the crime during a hunting trip in the remote Wyoming mountains and was brutally attacked by the real criminals, John (Brian Keith) and his vicious partner Red, who left him for dead in the frozen wilderness. Now hiding in the crowded anonymity of Los Angeles, trying desperately to live a normal life under the shadow of suspicion, Vanning meets the beautiful and sympathetic Marie Gardner (Anne Bancroft), a fashion model who becomes drawn into his dangerous situation when she realizes that the haunted, gentle man she is falling for is not the killer everyone believes him to be. Insurance investigator Ben Fraser (James Gregory), a doggedly methodical professional who follows the evidence wherever it leads, systematically tracks Vanning’s movements through the city, slowly building a case that may ultimately prove his innocence or seal his doom. Meanwhile, the two ruthless criminals are closing in from the other direction, desperate to recover their stolen money and willing to kill anyone who stands in their way. Through a series of brilliantly constructed flashbacks, the truth about what happened in Wyoming gradually emerges. When the trail leads all parties back to the remote mountain wilderness where it all began, Vanning must confront his pursuers in the frozen landscape amid blinding snow and treacherous terrain, and prove his innocence once and for all in a climax that is as visually stunning as it is tension-filled.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

This colorized version of Nightfall reveals the dramatic contrast between the sun-drenched Los Angeles streets, with their warm light and palm-lined boulevards, and the snowbound Wyoming wilderness, with its vast white expanses and dark pine forests. The original black and white film captured Jacques Tourneur’s atmospheric direction beautifully, but the professionally colorized restoration brings the icy blue-white mountain landscapes, the warm golden light of California interiors, the neon-lit city scenes glowing in the night, and the tense confrontations between hunter and hunted to life with frame-by-frame precision. The climactic sequences in the snow are particularly breathtaking in color, with the brilliant white landscape providing a stunning backdrop for the final deadly confrontation. Historical Significance

Nightfall showcases the masterful direction of Jacques Tourneur, one of cinema’s greatest visual stylists, best known for the atmospheric horror classic Cat People and the definitive film noir Out of the Past. This is one of his finest late-career films, demonstrating the same extraordinary ability to create mood and tension through visual composition that made his earlier work so celebrated. Based on a novel by David Goodis, the legendary hard-boiled author whose work also provided the source material for François Truffaut’s Shoot the Piano Player, the film features exceptional location cinematography by Burnett Guffey, who captures both the urban grit of Los Angeles and the stunning natural beauty of the Wyoming mountains with equal skill. The film’s clever non-linear structure, which gradually reveals the truth through carefully timed flashbacks, was innovative for its era and keeps the audience constantly reassessing what they think they know. Anne Bancroft, years before her Oscar-winning performance in The Miracle Worker, is compelling and emotionally grounded as the resourceful Marie, while Brian Keith brings menacing charisma to the role of the lead criminal. The colorization adds breathtaking visual beauty to Tourneur’s already stunning compositions.
