Plot Summary
Bob Bingham (Mark Stevens) is a skilled Navy pilot carrying a devastating burden of guilt. During World War II, a tragic accident during a combat mission resulted in the deaths of his fellow crew members, and the memory has haunted him ever since. Though officially cleared of blame, Bingham cannot forgive himself, and the psychological scars have made it impossible for him to resume his career as a combat pilot.
When the Korean War erupts, Bingham sees an opportunity for redemption — not in the air, but beneath the waves. He volunteers for submarine service, one of the Navy’s most dangerous assignments, requesting duty aboard a vessel operating in the treacherous waters that American submariners have dubbed “Torpedo Alley” — the heavily defended Korean coastal waters where enemy shipping and naval forces pose constant threats.
Aboard the submarine, Bingham must adapt to a completely different form of warfare. The cramped quarters, the constant danger of depth charges, the nerve-wracking tension of torpedo runs against enemy vessels, and the claustrophobic pressure of extended underwater patrols test every man aboard. Bingham’s fellow submariners are initially suspicious of the former pilot who has transferred to their world, and he must earn their trust through competence and courage.
As the submarine conducts increasingly dangerous patrols along the Korean coast — attacking enemy supply ships, landing reconnaissance teams on hostile shores, and evading enemy destroyers and aircraft — Bingham gradually finds the redemption he seeks. But the Korean War is brutal and unforgiving, and the final mission pushes the crew to their absolute limits, forcing Bingham to confront his deepest fears in a climactic engagement that will determine whether he can finally find peace. Back home, Susan (Dorothy Malone) waits and hopes for the man she loves to return whole in body and spirit.

Historical Significance
Torpedo Alley is one of the relatively rare films depicting naval operations during the Korean War, a conflict that has been called “the forgotten war” in American cinema as well as in public memory. The film incorporates authentic naval footage and technical details that give it documentary value as a record of Korean War submarine operations. The psychological theme of wartime guilt and redemption reflects the growing awareness of combat trauma that would eventually lead to the recognition of post-traumatic stress disorder.
