Plot Summary

Ole Olsen and Chic Johnson, flush with the success of Hellzapoppin’, return to Universal Studios to deliver the follow-up picture their contract demands. Their mere arrival at the studio gates sends the executive staff into hiding: the memory of what happened last time they were there is still fresh and still painful.

Unable to get a meeting with anyone at the studio, Olsen and Johnson simply take matters into their own hands and start making a movie — any movie — using whatever Universal personnel, props, and sets they encounter along the way. Their wandering through the studio backlot becomes an excuse for a succession of celebrity encounters and comic set pieces: they interrupt horror productions, burst in on costume dramas, and create absolute mayhem in the studio commissary.

The nominal romantic plot involves Marjorie Nelson (Martha O’Driscoll) and Edmund “Mac” MacLean (Patric Knowles), a young couple who need the studio’s cooperation to stage a talent show. Their relatively straightforward task becomes impossibly complicated by Olsen and Johnson’s enthusiastic interference. Cass Daley provides anarchic musical comedy as the singing Sadie Silverfish. Shemp Howard brings his distinctive brand of bewildered aggression to a supporting role.

The film’s greatest delight is its parade of Universal contract players appearing as themselves: Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, delivering their scenes with the comic self-awareness of performers in on the joke. Hans Conried turns up in an eccentric cameo, and Percy Kilbride’s Colonel Merriweather is a masterpiece of bemused pomposity.

Edward F. Cline was a veteran comedy director whose credits stretched back to Buster Keaton’s silent films, and he handles the controlled chaos of Crazy House with practiced ease — maintaining just enough momentum to keep the film’s outrageous tangents feeling like part of a coherent whole rather than random noise. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, who were in the middle of their enormously successful Holmes and Watson series at Universal, prove themselves excellent comic sports — their willingness to send up their own screen personas is part of what makes Crazy House’s meta-comedy work so well. Cass Daley, whose enormous mouth and belting voice made her one of the most distinctive comic performers of the 1940s, steals every musical scene she appears in.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: Do I need to see Hellzapoppin’ before watching Crazy House?
A: Crazy House is designed to stand on its own as a classic film and works perfectly well without prior knowledge of Hellzapoppin’. However, fans of the earlier film will enjoy the many references and the general sense of Olsen and Johnson returning to the scene of a previous crime. Both films are available as colorized HD downloads.

Q: Are Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce really playing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson?
A: Yes — and it is one of the film’s best jokes. Rathbone and Bruce were making their celebrated Holmes and Watson series at Universal at precisely this time, and their appearance in Crazy House as their own famous screen characters, cheerfully participating in Olsen and Johnson’s nonsense, remains one of the most delightful self-referential gags in classic Hollywood comedy.

Q: Who is Shemp Howard in this black and white classic?
A: Shemp Howard was one of the original Three Stooges — he was the third Stooge before Curly replaced him, and he rejoined the act after Curly’s illness in 1946. In Crazy House he plays “Mumbo,” a minor supporting role, but his appearance is a charming piece of comedy history.
