Plot Summary

Mike Wilson (Russ Tamblyn), a young undercover police officer, arrives at a suburban high school posing as tough transfer student “Tony Baker.” His mission: infiltrate the student drug scene and identify a mysterious supplier known only as “Mr. A” who has been peddling marijuana and harder drugs to teenagers.

Tony quickly establishes himself as a rebel, clashing with teachers and students alike. He lives in an apartment with Gwen Dulaine (Mamie Van Doren), a married woman who pretends to be his aunt in public while making increasingly bold attempts to seduce him in private. Tony begins dating pupil Joan Staples (Diane Jergens), an attractive student already involved with drugs, to learn where she purchases marijuana. He crosses paths with the beatnik J.I. Coleridge (John Drew Barrymore), a nihilistic poet who recites dark verse in the school hangout, and incurs the suspicion of teacher Arlene Williams (Jan Sterling).

As Tony digs deeper into the school’s drug underworld, he discovers that Bix (Ray Anthony), a smooth-talking jazz musician, is Mr. A’s distribution network. Mr. A himself turns out to be Mr. August (Jackie Coogan), an outwardly respectable figure who controls the entire operation from behind the scenes. With the help of fellow undercover officer Quinn (Charles Chaplin Jr.), who risks his life in a critical moment, Tony gathers enough evidence to bring down the ring. The criminals are apprehended, and Joan promises Mike that she is finished with drugs.

Historical Significance

High School Confidential! is a landmark of 1950s teen exploitation cinema, produced by Albert Zugsmith as the first film in a six-picture deal with MGM. The film grossed $1.9 million against a budget of just $532,000, making it a significant commercial hit. Director Jack Arnold, best known for science fiction classics like Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), brought a dynamic visual style to the material while subtly undermining its preachy anti-drug message. The film’s unique blend of earnest moralizing and gleeful exploitation earned it a place on the Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson’s list of “The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made.” White Zombie’s platinum-selling album La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1 sampled the film on four separate tracks, introducing it to a new generation. The restored colorized version preserves this irresistible time capsule of 1950s rebellious youth culture and rock and roll energy.

Q: Is this really an anti-drug film?
A: Officially yes — the film was conceived as a morality tale warning teenagers about the dangers of marijuana. That tension between message and execution is what makes the film so entertaining today.
