Plot Summary

Following the sudden death of his father, young Nicholas Nickleby finds himself, together with his mother and his beautiful sister Kate, at the mercy of his uncle Ralph Nickleby — a wealthy, cold-hearted London moneylender who regards his impoverished relatives as nuisances to be disposed of rather than family to be helped.

Ralph secures Nicholas a position as assistant to Wackford Squeers (Alfred Drayton) at Dotheboys Hall in Yorkshire, a so-called boarding school that is in reality a dumping ground for unwanted children. Squeers and his horrible wife exploit, starve, and brutalise their young charges while pocketing the fees sent by distant parents who will never visit. Nicholas is appalled by what he witnesses, and when Squeers’s cruelty toward the gentle, simple-minded boy Smike (Aubrey Woods) becomes unbearable, Nicholas thrashes the schoolmaster and flees, taking Smike with him as a devoted companion.

Back in London, Ralph has installed Kate in a position where she will be exposed to the unwelcome attentions of his wealthy associate Sir Mulberry Hawk, willing to sacrifice his niece’s reputation to maintain a profitable business relationship. Nicholas, arriving in London with Smike, discovers his sister’s danger and confronts Hawk directly — earning Ralph’s bitter enmity and setting in motion the central conflict between nephew and uncle.

Nicholas encounters kindness in the persons of the Cheeryble brothers, benevolent merchants who offer him honest employment and become his protectors. Through the Cheerybles, Nicholas meets Madeline Bray, a beautiful young woman trapped by her father’s debts and Ralph’s scheming into a marriage she dreads. As Nicholas fights to save Madeline, protect Kate, shelter Smike, and resist Ralph’s escalating persecution, the truth about familial connections that Ralph has concealed begins to emerge — connections that, when revealed, will bring about a devastating reckoning.

Cast & Crew

Director: Alberto Cavalcanti
Stars: Derek Bond, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Alfred Drayton, Sally Ann Howes, Mary Merrall, Sybil Thorndike, Bernard Miles, Aubrey Woods, Fay Compton, Cathleen Nesbitt, Emrys Jones

Derek Bond plays the heroic young Nicholas with earnest conviction, while Sir Cedric Hardwicke is magnificently villainous as Uncle Ralph — all cold intelligence and controlled malice. Alfred Drayton is memorably grotesque as Squeers, and the supporting cast, drawn from the finest British character actors of the era including Dame Sybil Thorndike, represents an embarrassment of theatrical riches.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

Dickens’s world — the dark, fog-shrouded streets of Victorian London, the bleak Yorkshire moors around Dotheboys Hall, the warm interiors of the Cheeryble counting house, the fashionable drawing rooms where Kate must endure unwanted attention — gains extraordinary visual richness through expert colorization. The contrast between the cold greys of Ralph’s world and the warm tones of genuine kindness becomes a visual metaphor for the novel’s moral landscape. Period costumes, carriages, and the distinctive architecture of mid-nineteenth-century England are beautifully enhanced in full colour. Now also available in colour. Historical Significance

Nicholas Nickleby was produced by Ealing Studios during their golden age, when the studio was creating some of the finest British films ever made. Director Alberto Cavalcanti — a Brazilian-born filmmaker who had been instrumental in the British documentary movement — brings a continental sophistication to this quintessentially English material, balancing Dickens’s broad comedy with his passionate social anger and genuine emotional depth. The film’s depiction of Dotheboys Hall drew on Dickens’s own research into the real Yorkshire schools that inspired his novel, institutions whose cruelty helped drive the educational reforms of the Victorian era. The production’s exceptional casting represents a snapshot of British theatrical talent at its peak, with performers from the West End and the Old Vic bringing Dickens’s unforgettable characters to life. Through colorization, this classic Ealing production has been preserved for modern audiences.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Movie-Specific Questions

Q: How faithful is this to the Dickens novel?
A: Remarkably faithful for a feature film adaptation — the screenplay captures the major plot lines, key characters, and essential themes of Dickens’s sprawling novel, necessarily condensing but never betraying the source material.

Q: Is this suitable for family viewing?
A: Yes, though Squeers’s cruelty toward the children at Dotheboys Hall is depicted honestly and may be distressing for younger viewers. It is, however, exactly as Dickens intended — showing injustice clearly so that it may be recognised and opposed.

Q: How does this compare to other Dickens adaptations?
A: This Ealing version is considered one of the finest screen adaptations of Nicholas Nickleby, with a cast of exceptional quality and a director who understood both the social criticism and the theatrical exuberance of Dickens’s storytelling.
