Plot Summary

In Egypt, the High Priest Yousef Bey (John Carradine) receives a sacred mission: travel to America and recover the body of Princess Ananka and her immortal guardian Kharis (Lon Chaney Jr.), both lost during the events of previous encounters. Armed with the secret of the tana leaves — the ancient brew that gives Kharis life and commands his obedience — Yousef Bey journeys to the quiet college town of Mapleton, Massachusetts.

In Mapleton, the scholarly Professor Norman (Frank Reicher) has been studying the previous mummy incidents in his university lectures, treating them as Egyptian mythology. He is fatally wrong. When Yousef Bey brews the tana leaves under the full moon, Kharis rises again — a shambling, bandaged figure of implacable purpose who murders anyone standing between him and his ancient beloved.

But Kharis does not seek Ananka’s preserved mummy. Instead, he is drawn to Amina Mansouri (Ramsay Ames), a beautiful young Egyptian-American student who has been suffering mysterious fainting spells, strange dreams of ancient Egypt, and an inexplicable white streak appearing in her dark hair. Amina is the reincarnation of Princess Ananka, and as Kharis draws closer, Ananka’s ancient identity begins to overwhelm Amina’s modern personality. Her boyfriend Tom Hervey (Robert Lowery) fights desperately to save her, but Kharis is beyond mortal resistance. Meanwhile, Yousef Bey himself falls in love with Amina and attempts to betray his sacred mission — a betrayal that Kharis punishes with devastating finality before carrying Amina into the swamps for a climax that shocked 1944 audiences with its hopeless, tragic beauty.

Historical Significance

Released in 1944, The Mummy’s Ghost is notable for its unusually dark ending — in an era when Hollywood demanded that good triumph over evil, this film dares to let the monster win, carrying the heroine away to a fate worse than death in one of classic horror’s most memorably tragic finales. John Carradine’s commanding performance as the corrupt priest adds Shakespearean dimension, and the film’s exploration of reincarnation and identity gives it unexpected philosophical depth. Through colorization, this atmospheric horror classic is preserved for modern audiences.

A: Despite heavy makeup that hides his face, Chaney conveys genuine pathos and tragic longing through physical performance alone, making Kharis a figure of doomed romance rather than simple menace.
