Experience the charming screwball comedy The Perfect Specimen (1937) colorized in stunning HD quality. Directed by Michael Curtiz, this delightful Warner Bros. production stars Errol Flynn — in a rare comedy role — as Gerald Doone, a fabulously wealthy young man who has been raised in complete isolation by his eccentric grandmother to be the ‘perfect specimen’ of manhood — physically fit, intellectually brilliant, and utterly sheltered from the corruption of the outside world. When a beautiful, spirited young woman (Joan Blondell) literally crashes through the estate walls in her car, Gerald escapes into the real world for the first time and discovers that human life is gloriously messy, wonderfully unpredictable, and infinitely more fun than perfection. Now available as an instant, DRM-free digital download for only €15.00.

Plot Summary

Gerald Doone (Errol Flynn) has lived his entire life behind the walls of his grandmother’s vast estate, raised according to her fanatical programme to create the perfect human being. He speaks multiple languages, excels at every sport, has read every important book, and maintains a body in peak physical condition. He is also utterly, hilariously innocent of real human behaviour — he has never met a woman his age, never been to a restaurant, never experienced the chaotic, glorious disorder of ordinary life.

Mona Carter (Joan Blondell), a fast-talking, resourceful journalist, crashes her car through the estate walls and into Gerald’s perfectly ordered world. Gerald, fascinated by this noisy, opinionated, completely unpredictable creature from the outside world, helps her — and when his grandmother’s security forces try to remove Mona, Gerald makes the momentous decision to escape with her.

Loosed upon an unsuspecting world, Gerald is a magnificent innocent abroad. His extraordinary physical abilities and intellectual knowledge are spectacularly useless in dealing with real-world situations like ordering a meal, understanding money, or navigating social conventions. But his natural charm, genuine kindness, and bewildered delight at everything he encounters make him irresistible — particularly to Mona, who finds herself falling in love with the one man in the world who has absolutely no idea how to court a woman. Meanwhile, Gerald’s grandmother deploys lawyers, detectives, and every resource at her disposal to retrieve her perfect specimen before the corrupting influence of the real world ruins her life’s work.

Cast & Crew

Director: Michael Curtiz
Stars: Errol Flynn, usually cast as a swashbuckling action hero, is delightfully surprising in this comedy role — his natural charm, physical grace, and genuine warmth make Gerald both funny and genuinely endearing, and his comic timing is far better than his action-hero reputation suggests. Joan Blondell is the perfect sparring partner — tough, witty, and warm — and the chemistry between them crackles with screwball delight.

Historical Significance

Released in 1937, The Perfect Specimen demonstrates that Errol Flynn — usually remembered only for swashbuckling adventures — possessed genuine comic talent that Warner Bros. rarely exploited. Director Michael Curtiz, who would later helm Casablanca, brings his characteristic visual flair and pacing to a screwball comedy that deserves wider recognition. Joan Blondell’s performance showcases the fast-talking, independent-minded heroines that made 1930s comedy cinema so vibrant. Through colorization, this delightful screwball comedy is preserved for modern audiences.
