The Shop on Main Street (1965) — Buy This Classic in Color

The Shop on Main Street is a 1965 drama directed by Ján Kadár, a landmark of Czechoslovak cinema and an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film. Set during the Second World War, it stars Ida Kamińska and Jozef Kroner in two of the most memorable performances of the era, supported by František Zvarík, Hana Slivková and Martin Hollý. The story follows a mild-mannered carpenter handed control of a small Jewish-owned shop, and the impossible moral corner he is slowly backed into. It is a film of quiet devastation, built from ordinary people, small kindnesses and creeping fear. Own this classic movie in color as a DRM-free MP4 digital download for just €15.00.

Plot Summary

The film opens in a small town during the wartime Slovak State, where Anton “Tóno” Brtko, a carpenter played by Jozef Kroner, lives a modest, unremarkable life with his wife Evelyna, played by Hana Slivková. Tóno is a decent man of limited ambition, more comfortable in his workshop than in the world of politics, and he is easily pushed around by those with more confidence than he has. His brother-in-law, the local fascist militia commander Marián Peter, played by František Zvarík, sees an opportunity for the family and arranges for Tóno to be appointed as an “Aryan controller” of a small button shop on the town’s main street.

The shop belongs to Rozália Lautmannová, an elderly, hard-of-hearing Jewish widow played by Ida Kamińska. Mrs. Lautmannová barely understands what is happening around her; she is proud of her little business, devoted to her customers, and largely insulated from the tightening restrictions closing in on the town’s Jewish community. When Tóno arrives to take up his post, she mistakes him for a relative or a hired helper and welcomes him warmly. Unable to bring himself to explain the truth, Tóno simply goes along with it.

What begins as an awkward arrangement gradually becomes something warmer. Tóno does small jobs around the shop, keeps Mrs. Lautmannová company, and quietly shields her from the paperwork and officialdom she cannot follow. She, in turn, treats him with a trust and affection he does not receive anywhere else. The shop becomes a small island of ordinary human decency in a town that is becoming less ordinary by the day.

Around them, the world hardens. Peter and his militia colleagues grow louder and more confident, and the town’s Jewish residents face confiscation, restrictions and, increasingly, deportation. Tóno’s wife and neighbours pressure him to take what he is owed and to stop making trouble. His position as controller was meant to enrich him; instead it has made him the reluctant guardian of a woman the authorities have already written off.

As the deportations begin, Tóno is forced to confront what his small deceptions have actually been protecting. He has no power to stop what is coming, and every attempt to keep Mrs. Lautmannová safe puts him at greater risk. The film tightens around a single question: when a man has spent months pretending to be something he is not, what does he do in the one moment that actually matters?

Why Buy This Classic in Color?

The Shop on Main Street was shot in black and white, and this professionally colourised restoration opens up a world that monochrome tends to flatten: the warm, faded interior of Mrs. Lautmannová’s button shop, the wooden tones of Tóno’s workshop, the muted browns and greys of a small town under occupation. Period-accurate costume and set detail — the fabrics, the shop fittings, the militia uniforms — read far more clearly once colour distinguishes them, and the film’s locations gain a lived-in texture that supports its documentary-like realism. Crucially, the colourisation serves the performances rather than competing with them: the warmth of Kamińska’s face and the worry that moves across Kroner’s are easier to follow, and the film’s central relationship feels even more intimate. For viewers who have only ever seen this classic in black and white, the colorized edition is a genuinely new way to experience it. Buy it now at €15.00 with instant DRM-free MP4 download.

Historical Significance

The Shop on Main Street won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966, the first Czechoslovak film to do so, and it remains one of the most acclaimed works of the Czech and Slovak New Wave. It was directed by Ján Kadár, who made the film with Elmar Klos as part of one of the most celebrated directing partnerships in Eastern European cinema. The film’s subject matter — the complicity of ordinary people in the persecution of their neighbours — was politically charged in its own time, and it has lost none of its force since.

Ida Kamińska, already a towering figure in Yiddish theatre, gave the performance of her career as Mrs. Lautmannová and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, a rare honour for a performer in a non-English-language role. Jozef Kroner’s Tóno Brtko is the film’s moral centre, a man whose weakness and decency are tangled together so tightly that audiences still argue about him. Together they carry a story that refuses easy heroes and easy villains.

More than half a century on, The Shop on Main Street endures because it understands how atrocity arrives: not always through monsters, but through ordinary people making small, comfortable compromises. Its restraint is what makes it devastating. This colorized edition brings the film to new audiences, offering a fresh way to encounter a classic that deserves to be watched, discussed and remembered.
