Plot Summary

The jungle communities along the major trading routes are gripped by terror. Travelers and traders are being attacked and killed by what appear to be leopards, but the nature of the attacks suggests something far more sinister than random animal predation. The victims are found with claw marks that are too precise, too deliberate, and the attacks target only those carrying valuable goods or those who threaten the power of certain tribal factions.

Tarzan investigates and discovers the horrifying truth — the attacks are being carried out not by real leopards but by members of a secret cult whose warriors wear leopard skins and metal claws, killing in the guise of animals to terrorize the population and maintain their grip on the region through fear. The cult is led by a beautiful but fanatical high priestess who commands absolute loyalty from her followers and will stop at nothing to maintain and expand her power.

The situation becomes even more dangerous when the cult infiltrates the community near Tarzan’s home. A seemingly innocent young woman arrives claiming to be a refugee, but she is actually a cult agent sent to spy on Tarzan and identify his vulnerabilities. When Boy befriends her, the cult gains a potential weapon against the ape man — the threat to his family that could neutralize even his formidable strength.

Tarzan must unravel the cult’s network of spies and assassins, protect his family from infiltration, and ultimately confront the leopard warriors in their hidden lair. The climactic battle between Tarzan and the leopard cult is one of the most spectacular and dramatic confrontations in the entire Tarzan series, as the ape man faces an army of fanatical warriors in a desperate fight to end their reign of terror once and for all, calling upon every ounce of his legendary strength and jungle cunning.

Historical Significance

Tarzan and the Leopard Woman was the tenth entry in the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan series and is widely regarded as one of the most atmospheric and dramatic films in the franchise. The concept of the leopard cult was inspired by real historical accounts of leopard societies in West Africa, lending the story an element of authenticity that elevates it above typical jungle adventure fare. Acquanetta, known as the ‘Venezuelan Volcano,’ was one of the most exotic and striking presences in 1940s Hollywood. Kurt Neumann’s direction creates genuine suspense and atmosphere unusual for the series. Through colorization, this atmospheric jungle thriller is preserved for modern audiences.
