Plot Summary
Tony Blake is a young aspiring writer who is completely broke and utterly desperate. His novel about the Loch Ness Monster has been rejected by every publisher in London, and unless he can generate some publicity that will make the book commercially viable, his literary career is over before it has begun. In desperation, Tony hatches an audacious plan β he will travel to Scotland, fake a convincing Loch Ness Monster sighting, generate massive press coverage, and ride the wave of public excitement to sell his book.
Armed with more enthusiasm than competence, Tony and his motley crew of friends head north to the shores of Loch Ness, where they set about constructing a fake monster from whatever materials they can find locally. The plan seems simple enough until they actually arrive and discover that faking a monster sighting is considerably more difficult than they imagined β the locals are simultaneously suspicious, helpful, and entertainingly eccentric; the Scottish weather is appalling; and the materials for building a convincing prehistoric creature are seriously inadequate.
As one mishap follows another, the comedy escalates through a wonderful series of farcical situations. The fake monster keeps falling apart, their cover story develops holes that a real monster could swim through, romantic complications arise when Tony encounters a beautiful local girl, and Sid James appears as a resourcefully larcenous local who sees the opportunity for profit in every disaster.
But just when the scheme seems doomed to spectacular failure, events take an unexpected turn that suggests the hoaxers may not be the only ones with a secret at Loch Ness, leading to a delightfully surprising and satisfying conclusion that brings together comedy, romance, and a genuine sense of wonder.
