Plot Summary

New York City, the height of the Ziegfeld era. Three very different women are selected to join the legendary Ziegfeld Follies — the most prestigious and glamorous revue in American show business — and their lives are changed forever, though not always for the better.

Susan Gallagher (Judy Garland) is a talented young vaudeville performer who has been touring with her father Pop (Charles Winninger) in a small-time act for years. When Ziegfeld offers her a spot in the Follies, she must leave her beloved father behind — a decision that tears at her heart but opens the door to the stardom her extraordinary talent deserves. Susan’s genuine ability and warm personality carry her steadily upward, even as she worries about her father’s declining career and health.

Sheila Regan (Lana Turner) is a beautiful working-class girl from Brooklyn whose stunning looks catch Ziegfeld’s eye. Suddenly elevated from elevator operator to Broadway showgirl, Sheila is intoxicated by the glamour, luxury, and attention that her new life brings. She abandons her devoted truck-driver boyfriend Gil (James Stewart) for wealthy admirers and an increasingly extravagant lifestyle, discovering that the world of champagne and penthouse apartments is addictive and ultimately destructive.

Sandra Kolter (Hedy Lamarr) is a European beauty married to a struggling violinist, Franz (Philip Dorn). She joins the Follies to support her husband’s musical career, but the spotlight ignites attention from wealthy admirer Geoffrey Collis, threatening Sandra’s marriage and forcing her to choose between glamour and devotion.

As the three women navigate the dazzling and treacherous world of the Follies, their paths diverge dramatically. Susan’s talent and groundedness lead her toward genuine success and a reconciliation with her father that brings the story its most touching moments. Sandra’s loyalty to her husband is tested but ultimately endures, demonstrating that love can survive the temptations of wealth and fame. But Sheila — beautiful, reckless, and unable to resist the intoxication of the high life — descends into alcoholism and despair, her story building toward a tragic climax on the grand staircase of the Follies that remains one of the most devastatingly powerful scenes in classic Hollywood cinema.

Historical Significance

Ziegfeld Girl represented MGM at its most lavish and ambitious, combining genuine dramatic substance with production numbers of staggering visual magnificence. The film was part of MGM’s ongoing celebration of the Ziegfeld legacy following the hugely successful The Great Ziegfeld (1936). Lana Turner’s performance — particularly the iconic staircase scene where the disgraced Sheila attempts one final descent in full Ziegfeld regalia — cemented her status as a major dramatic actress as well as a beauty icon. The film also showcased Judy Garland’s continuing maturation from child star to adult performer of extraordinary range. Released in the final months before America’s entry into World War II, the film captures the peak of Hollywood’s golden age of glamour and spectacle. Through colorization, this magnificent production has been preserved for modern audiences in a stunning new visual presentation.
