Plot Summary
Professor Casanova Q. Brown is a gentle, bookish man who lectures on English literature at a small college. Having recovered from the emotional wreckage of his brief and disastrous first marriage to the spirited Isobel Drury, Casanova is preparing to marry the perfectly pleasant, perfectly sensible Madge Ferris. The wedding is days away, the arrangements are complete, and Casanova is cautiously optimistic about his romantic future.
Then a letter arrives that demolishes his carefully reconstructed life. Isobel, it transpires, was pregnant when they divorced, and she has just given birth to a baby girl. Rather than contact Casanova, Isobel has arranged to have the child adopted by another family. Casanova is thunderstruck — he is a father, and his daughter is about to be given away to strangers.
Without telling his bewildered fiancée or her increasingly suspicious family, Casanova rushes to the hospital where the baby is being held before the adoption is finalised. In a scene of inspired comic desperation, he steals his own daughter from the hospital nursery and retreats to his hotel room, where he attempts to care for a newborn infant with absolutely no experience, no supplies, and no idea what he is doing.
The hotel room rapidly becomes a battlefield of bottles, nappies, crying, and improvisational parenting. Meanwhile, Madge and her family are growing increasingly alarmed by Casanova’s erratic behaviour and unexplained absences. Isobel, furious that someone has taken the baby, begins her own investigation. And Casanova, who is falling helplessly in love with his tiny daughter, must confront the truth that the baby he is fighting to keep may lead him back to the woman he never truly stopped loving.

Why Buy This Classic in Color?
The warm, inviting visual world of 1940s small-town America — the tree-lined college campus, the elegant Ferris family home, the cosy chaos of Casanova’s hotel room nursery, and the period fashions and automobiles — is beautifully enhanced through expert colorization. The contrast between Casanova’s orderly academic life and the colourful chaos of emergency fatherhood gains delightful visual warmth. The baby herself, the centre of so much comic mayhem, is rendered with charming detail. Teresa Wright’s elegant costumes and Gary Cooper’s increasingly dishevelled professor attire tell the story visually. Now also available in colour. Own this charming comedy classic for just €15.00 — where one small baby creates one enormous problem.
Historical Significance
Casanova Brown reunited Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright, who had previously starred together in the acclaimed The Pride of the Yankees (1942), and their natural chemistry elevates a witty script by Nunnally Johnson (based on a play by Thomas Mitchell and Floyd Dell). Director Sam Wood, who had guided Cooper through For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) and The Pride of the Yankees, understood exactly how to use Cooper’s unique screen presence for comedy — his tall, lanky physicality and genuine bewilderment in the face of domestic chaos create some of the most memorable comedic moments of the 1940s. The film was produced by International Pictures and released through RKO, representing the independent production trend that was reshaping Hollywood during the war years. Through colorization, this sophisticated wartime comedy has been preserved for modern audiences.
