Plot Summary

The Darling nursery in London is a place of warmth, imagination, and the lingering magic of childhood. Wendy, John, and Michael Darling are preparing for bed when Peter Pan arrives at their window, searching for his lost shadow. Peter is accompanied by the jealous fairy Tinker Bell, whose tiny light flickers with possessive devotion to the boy who will never grow up.

Peter teaches the Darling children to fly — ‘think lovely thoughts’ and sprinkle fairy dust — and leads them out through the nursery window on a soaring journey across the London sky to Neverland, the magical island where Peter leads his band of Lost Boys, where mermaids swim in crystalline lagoons, where the indigenous Tiger Lily and her tribe maintain their own part of the island, and where the villainous Captain Hook and his crew of pirates plot their endless revenge against Peter.

In Neverland, Wendy assumes a maternal role for the Lost Boys, who have never known a mother’s care. The children encounter mermaids, participate in daring escapades, and experience the freedom of a world without grown-up rules. But danger is ever-present in the form of Captain Hook, the elegant but vicious pirate captain whose hand was bitten off by a crocodile that now follows him with a ticking clock in its belly.

The conflict between Peter and Hook builds to a thrilling climax aboard the pirate ship, where Peter must rescue his friends from Hook’s diabolical plans. The final battle is a masterpiece of choreographed swordplay and aerial spectacle. The resolution carries the bittersweet recognition that while Peter will remain forever young in Neverland, the Darling children must return home and eventually grow up — carrying the memory of their magical adventure always in their hearts.
